Rough, gruesome images have been leaked from the area hospital (the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center )where Tamerlan Tsarnaev (aka Suspect #1 for the Boston Marathon Bombing) was taken after an early morning shootout with authorities.
The photo first appeared on REDDIT and allegedly shows Tsarnaev lying on a gurney with a large open wound on his chest. The Boston area police have confirmed (according to TMZ's site) that this is an actual photo and are at the moment investigating how and where the photo was leaked.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar are suspected to be the Boston Marathon Bombers after photos the two men were released by the FBI showing them leaving black nylon backpacks at the scene of both explosions. Then early this morning the two men robbed a 7/11 killed a MIT Police Officer then lead police on a high speed chase through the Boston suburbs which ended in a shootout with responding officers. During the exchange another officer was critically wounded.
At the moment Boston and the surrounding area are on lockdown as FBI and Police go door to door in search of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who escaped.

Is that gash where his brother ran him over?
Probably. If it was blow back from a pipe bomb there would of been more damage I believe. And it doesn't look like anything in the way of gunfire that I have seen.
The "gash" is a thoracotomy. Such an incision is made into the pleural region of the chest to gain access to thoracic organs: heart, lungs, or thoracic aorta. The photograph is not that of an autopsy, but probably taken shortly after the elder Tsarnaev was declared deceased and beyond restoration of vital signs. The purplish coloring of the skin is a postmortem lividity and indicates that blood pooling occurred after loss of cardiac pressure. Several bullet wounds are visible and blood flow suggests that Tsarnaev lay on his left side for a period after being shot. There are conflicting anecdotes about the younger brother running over the older. The police claim that the younger brother charged them in the SUV as they were attempting to subdue the older Tsarnaev. But a local woman says that she saw a police vehicle drive over Tsarnaev after the younger brother escaped in the SUV. Hard to tell from the lateral POV of the death photograph. I'm glad that this photo was leaked as it shows what extreme violence really looks like. Such a senseless tragedy and waste of human potential.
